Dimension of Harmony, oil on linen, 24” x 18”
Arch Enemy Arts presents J L King’s solo debut, IMPRESSIONS, eight works in oil on linen that “explore the lasting impressions that come with finding connection beyond the differences.” In these still lifes, buzzing with energy, King boasts impressive trompe l’oeil finesse—painted marble frames, ripped canvas, the backs of paintings, droplets of water that seem to bead and trickle. She then combines these 3D illusions with a style of surrealism that recalls some of the greats, painters like Magritte, Kay Sage, and de Chirico. As if that weren’t enough, each piece in IMPRESSIONS makes a protagonist of one or more composite creatures—fat-bottomed pears, potted green-people, and one giant strawberry-fly—adding a contemporary-pop humor that is an absolute joy to behold. - AEA Gallery
“I am intrigued by the restlessness of nature and the boundless evolution to exist; these elements allow for limitless combinations and hybridizations to imagine with nature’s creatures. I hope that my depictions may be familiar enough to inspire the imagination with playful views of the world that we live in. I avoid hardline messages and open my work up to more visceral responses, in favor of a ‘living’ painting that projects an emotion that can change with time in the viewer. If seeing my work leads to a curious smile, I’m pleased.” - J L King

Series 1: Cloud Control gift set
Creating art for ALL to enjoy is one of the most fulfilling experiences. It feels great; so I am creating this new series of art to be high quality, original, and accessible. Each piece is created with the same love, care, and oil painting techniques that I use in larger oil paintings. That same essence and indescribable quality that only comes from a creation by hand.
Be the first to get a miniature from this limited first series.
Every painting is one-of-a-kind. If you would like to see the paintings in person and hand-pick one from my studio, please come to my Open Studio event on Sunday, December 7th! The first offer will be given to those on my email list on Monday, Dec. 1st.
Includes:
1 original oil painting on canvas (2”x 2” or 3”x 2”)
1 miniature paint embellished wood artist easel
1 signed Certificate of Authenticity for Series 1: Cloud Control
$125 each (free shipping in the US)
Series 1: Cloud Control
About this series: This first series is derived from my popular series of 2015-2017 “contained clouds” paintings which invoked many visual metaphors shared from viewers. The clouds still captivate me and I was happy to revisit the trip in my imagination with them.
“When and how can I get them?”

Flower Trip - Cotton I, oil on linen, 10” x 10”
This Spring, I spent a lot of time in and around San Francisco taking notice of gorgeous flowering plants. Any flower that gave me pause on my walks in search of my daily dose of awe and wonder. Thoughts And Roses, oil on linen, 18” x 24”
About this piece: I used to love to write. Now, I just love to -think- about writing as my art is expressed wordlessly through painting. With that in mind, a familiar piece of lined paper evokes something and conventional beauty in unconventional settings always interests and excites me. But, I don't aspire to dissect the symbolism and meaning behind everything in my work. If you put some of those ideas together, perhaps it makes sense - though not required.

Join me for the final exhibit of the year, We Are Stardust, at Luna Rienne Gallery in San Francisco.
“We Are Stardust addresses notions of interconnectedness, romanticism, transience, and eternality. From scientists like Carl Sagan and Neil Degrasse Tyson to artists like David Bowie, Joni Mitchell, and Hoagy Carmichael, stardust has been used to literally and figuratively describe the human condition. Painting attempts to encapsulate these concepts through the use of basic materials: medium, surface, and brush; and it is simply magical to witness the diversity of work that emerges from them, much in the same way that every being created from stardust can be so different. We Are Stardust showcases the stellar work of nine painters that have established an artistic style that is both ethereal and substantive.” -Luna Rienne Gallery
Exhibiting Artists: Ursula Xanthe Young, Alec Huxley, Chris Stokes, Anthony Holdsworth, Daniel Chen, J L King, Emily Fromm, Michael Moncibaiz, and Beryl Landau.

Join me Saturday, March 16th for the Precious Metal group exhibition at Modern Eden Gallery in San Francisco where I look forward to exhibiting my newest piece of 2024.
“Artists explore the subject matter either through the use of actual gold and silver elements—such as leafing—or conceptually, by addressing themes of value, materiality, and alchemy in their work. This exhibition aims to examine the artistic and cultural implications of precious metals, while celebrating their innate beauty and luminosity.” -Modern Eden Gallery

Gentle Reminder, oil on linen, 12” x 9”
Just A Suggestion, oil on linen, 12” x 9”
Sticky notes were on my mind for these two shows. Reflecting on the many notes and ideas I leave for myself in all of my spaces. Little big reminders. Look at the simplicity of these pieces but think on them a little deeper and what these notes many mean to you.
These oil paintings will be available in two different groups exhibits. See “Gentle Reminder” at Brassworks Gallery in Portland Oregon and “Just A Suggestion” at Luna Rienne Gallery in San Francisco this weekend through January 2024.

Behind The Seen, oil on linen, 30” x 24”
Join me for the second triennial de Young Open exhibition at the de Young Museum in San Francisco. This year 7,766 artists submitted work for a chance to show on the de Young Museum walls. Highly esteemed museum curators and artists selected the artworks from 883 Bay Area residents. My piece, Behind the Seen, is one of the selected pieces this year.
I have admired the exhibits at the de Young for years and I am deeply honored to show my work there for this coveted opportunity. Come and celebrate the creativity of Bay Area artists for the Opening Day Celebration on Saturday, September 30 from 11 - 4pm. The de Young Open exhibit will run through January 7, 2024.
Most of the work in the exhibit will be available for sale with 100% of the proceeds going to the artists. Purchases will be handled by the individual artists. Please contact me if you are interested in adding “Behind The Seen” to your collection.

I hope you will join me for the opening of my first solo exhibition, Assorted Flavors. On exhibit will be 9 new paintings featuring sweet and savory favorites into reimagined worlds on canvas. Not your average, everyday food art - that, I promise.
“Assorted Flavors is a collection of food-related paintings depicting otherworldly musings and episodes of illusion with the artist's favorite edibles. Golden wrappers reveal worlds of chocolate confections; gummy fish pass the time on a quiet pier; and teacups burst out from pastry boxes. J.L. King's unique surrealist style emerges and immerses in this, her first solo gallery show." - Luna Rienne Gallery
